When ‘Signature sounds’ started in the 90s in the hoods of Pretoria, this was not a mere coincidence. The capital of South Africa and its hoods had been a breeding ground for different styles of music for decades. One style, called Bacardi, became especially conspicuous. 

Facing the old systems of inequality and new forms of freedom after the abolition of apartheid, new opportunities led to new styles. Bacardi was then mixed in with Kwaito, a slower version of its American counterpart, including percussions and rap music. 

This complex history of South African hood culture led to the mixture of these two genres. In turn, this would become the foundation of the sound we call Amapiano today.
